Why True Builders

Every era hides something. We plan for it first.

San Jose homes span a century of building, from 1920s Craftsman houses in Naglee Park to 1950s Cambrian ranches and 1990s Evergreen two-stories. Each hides something different: knob-and-tube wiring, galvanized pipes, undersized panels or single-pane glass. A remodel opens the walls once, so we plan structure, systems and design together.

  • Structural changes engineered first
  • Electrical, plumbing and HVAC planned
  • Rooms sequenced to keep the schedule
  • Finishes chosen before your fixed price

Naglee Park

Character homes near downtown and San Jose State. We update kitchens, baths and systems while respecting original details, and plan exterior work around conservation-area guidelines.

Conservation areas

Naglee Park, Hanchett & Hester Park and the Hensley district have design guidelines for exterior changes like windows and siding.

Electrical service

Whole-home remodels often push older 60-100 amp services past their limit, so we size any upgrade early, in the plan and the price.

Structural changes

Removing bearing walls, adding beams or changing rooflines needs engineered drawings and structural permits, prepared with design.

Trees & site work

If a remodel reaches the yard, San Jose requires a permit to remove ordinance-size trees: 38 inches or more around at 4½ feet up.

FAQs

San Jose home remodeling, questions answered.

Remodeling select spaces such as a kitchen and bathrooms typically takes about 4-5 months. Multi-room remodels with structural changes take about 6-8 months, and a complete whole-home redesign usually runs 8-12 months or more.
For select-space remodels, often yes, with careful phasing so you always have a working bathroom. For whole-house projects with extensive electrical, plumbing and framing work, we recommend staying elsewhere for safety and to keep the schedule tight.
Most remodels need building permits from the City of San José, plus electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits when those systems change and structural review when walls or beams move. Homes in conservation areas may need design review for exterior changes. We prepare and manage the full permit set.
With design-build, one team handles design, engineering and construction under a single contract. That keeps the design aligned with your budget from day one and avoids the redesigns and change orders that happen when an architect and a contractor work separately.
If your home has an older 60-100 amp service, a remodel is usually the right time. Modern kitchens, heat pumps, EV chargers and added circuits all need capacity, and upgrading while walls are open is far easier than doing it later.
We complete a design and budgeting phase before construction, selecting materials and finishes in advance. That lets us give you a fixed construction price with no surprise line items once work begins.
Yes. We work on early-1900s homes in neighborhoods like Naglee Park, Hanchett & Hester Park and Willow Glen, updating systems and layouts while respecting original character and any conservation-area guidelines.
All of them, including Willow Glen, Rose Garden, Naglee Park, Cambrian, Almaden Valley, Evergreen, Berryessa, Blossom Valley, West San José and Silver Creek. We’re based in San José and also serve Santa Clara, Campbell, Los Gatos and Milpitas.
